Do you Manage or Hire a Manager when you Start a Dollar Store
Even before you start a dollar store thousands of questions start nagging at you. Where is the right location? How big should your store be? Do you hire a professional to help with the set-up and opening of your store? What skill sets do you need in your employees? Even the little things like what color to paint the wall and the choice of colors for the flooring must be addressed. One of the most important questions to be answered is associated with the organizational structure of your business. Specifically you need to determine whether you will personally manage or bring in a manager for your dollar store business.
Answering this question should start by examining your own skills and training. If you lack any former leadership training or experience possibly you need to consider hiring an expert to help get things started for your dollar store business. This is especially true if you also lack retail experience. It might be a temporary move, but you can learn while having someone with experience get things set-up, started and running smoothly.
Your next consideration should be the earning capacity of the business. If you are about to start a dollar store that will be 1,000 square feet in size your store's potential sales and profits are significantly less than if you were to open a 5,000 square foot dollar store business. In one case store size may limit your ability to even consider hiring a manager for your business. In the other the decision can be made based on other factors.
Next examine your own personal situation. If you are still working for someone else, or if you have commitments that don't provide the freedom to be 100% committed to your business during all hours it is open, a manager may be required. After all, your employees will be new, the business will be growing, and as with all new operations there will be unexpected challenges requiring the immediate attention of a decision maker.
While there are several other considerations, one more needs to be mentioned in this article. If your plans are for growth of your overall dollar store business by adding more stores, hiring a manager early on can provide the time you need to provide training and to examine potential locations and for other needs. When the time is right and you start a dollar store in a second location your first store will not suffer and can continue healthy growth as your second store opens and begins the same growth process.
