Do You Really Need A Break Room When Opening A Dollarstore

As you prepare to open a new business there are so many things that must be done. Each seems like a small decision, yet together they combine to take days and weeks of time and concerted effort. Some tasks like selecting the color of the paint on the walls might take a few hours, or even less to finalize. Others like designing the final layout of a building could require considerable time and even expert help. One of the decisions that must be made during this time is whether to include an area as an employee break room or not. In this article I present ' do you really need a break room when opening a dollarstore.

If you are opening a dollarstore be sure to consider all the options available to your employees as a part of the decision making process. Is your business opening in a large mall or other situation where employees have access to a public cafeteria? Is there access to some other shared designated employee area? The bottom line question is whether the facility offers facilities for your employees to use during their breaks and lunches?

Part of the decision also revolves around how many employees you target to have on your payroll. Be sure to consider increased staffing levels as sales increase and especially your staffing needs during the holidays. As a general rule, consider the greater the number of employees, the more likely the need for you to offer a break area for them.

For some who are opening a dollarstore, total square footage being leased or rented may be the determining factor. A small space may require you to consider other options outside of your store. Don't forget to consider whether there might be some area in your store and backroom that could safely be shared for the planned use and as a break area?

Don't neglect possible theft and employee safety in your consideration. Be sure there is good access to an emergency exit. In most localities there are specific requirements for compliance, so be sure you adhere. On the other hand, regulations or not, don't trap your employees in an unsafe area while trying to squeeze in a break area at the last minute. Be sure to consider the potential for theft as well. Locating a break room right next to an open, unalarmed exit from your store is asking for trouble.

If you are considering opening a dollarstore be sure to invest the time to make the right decision regarding a break room area for your employees. For those planning a larger staff, break rooms of some type are almost a requirement. However if there are ways to provide storage lockers for employees and then to provide them with a shared break area you may have your solution.
