Today the phase pf HR is changing and entering into new era. Gone those days of HR being the cost centers of the company. The HR department is now becoming the most prominent body of any organization. Soon we will see HR people sitting with Board of and contributing in annual goals of the organization.
Competency mapping, potential appraisal, career progressions are now not a mere jargon for the any organization. They understand the importance of these activities and follow them religiously too.
HR of any good organization continuously strive for following things:
The Company should believe in procedure of selective hiring. They should have proper measures and tools i.e. the company should have ample data regarding the required competencies to do the job, because this is the second stage of retention. The very first phase of retaining the talent is recruitment. The candidate should be well taken care off while coming for interviews and going through the selection procedure. Until and unless the company will not leave the good impression on the employees the right talent will not be attracted towards the company and the good impression is the first step of the organization to make a dent on employees mind.
The recruitment team should have celerity in mind regarding both the things. The Job should be well studied and evaluated and the organization should have competency based job description of all the key responsible areas of the company. The company should put forward requirement in such a manner that the person who is applying for the job must have a clear idea, what will be the key responsibilities and challenges and what is the minimum eligibility to apply for the job. It will save the time as well as the cost of the company.
The most important aspect the companies should focus on. The HR team of the organizations should come out of the web of academic theories and fundamentals and should think at ground levels.
The employee who is coming out to work, some has to leave their native places some have to shift from far off areas to near by localities. Outstation candidates are always worried for the accommodations, the married outstation candidates; they face lot of problems, when they shift with their families form one place to another. They need to get a proper accommodation for their family and get their children in good schools. Altogether they have to start from scrap.
Here HR team can play a very good role and create a long lasting impression in the minds of the employees. They can have pacts with different schools so that the children of the new employees coming form different places can get admission easily. The HR Dept. of the organization should not only focus on employee’s individual needs and requirements but should lay emphasis on family needs too. The company should relive the employees mind from the tensions regarding bill payment, accommodation, gas booking, children admissions in schools up to the extent they can so that they can not only create a professional but a social bond with the employees. The company should create such kind of environment for the employees that if they will leave they should feel that they are leaving the social network of the company sponsored activities and many other benefits.
Another area of focus for the company is right career pathing of the employee. The company should be able to show them the big picture. The company should have proper channel for growth and should be able to well communicate it to the employees so the company should have good communication channels too. The employee should be aware about the possible opportunities available in the company. It is the responsibility of HR team to plan their career well within the company and also ensure that good performance should never remain un-rewarded. For good career progression of employees one thing should be ensured that organization should have adequate manpower and excellent manpower planning so that every body should have a fair chance of moving up in the organization on the
While reading it looks subjective approach but if practically applicable, this can be a real asset for the company. The HR team of the organization should owe the responsibility to run this mentoring system properly in the company. One should once try and step into the shoes of new joinees who are fresher and new to the corporate environment they need a friend, philosopher and a guide who can tell them and make them aware about the thing happening in the industry, in the organization and can tell them about the current trends. Mentor can also share his vast range of experience with the new joinees and can help them in fighting with new challenges, which they will face in doing their jobs. This activity helps in creating good bonds within the employees and with their bosses’ too. It also helps help in forming great teams, and provokes high quality teamwork in the organization.
The very first and the basic step of this process is to identify the training needs. If this goes wrong then rest of the process is worthless of any of the employee who is being provided with the training, for the HR dept. and for the organization too, because of the waste of time, money and energy. Apart from that it is one of the de-motivating factor for the employee. The training should be exactly according to the needs of the employees otherwise employees stop taking interest in the training activities and they presume that that the training sessions will be a waste of time. The organizations should follow high-end practices to identify the training needs and to the procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of training i.e. whether the
employees are implementing their learning’s on the job or not. HR dept. should ensure to follow the training effectiveness procedures on a scheduled basis so that they can in turn evaluate their performance that whether learning and development activities are going on properly on not. They can also keep a tab on implementation part of learning’s.
Still many more good procedures, policies and strategies to write but HR dept. should work in the above mention areas and should gain excellence in the same.
